Colonel McDaniel, a native of Waco, Texas, was born on 27 August 1965. Upon graduation from Texas A&M University in May 1988, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and ordered to Quantico, Virginia as a student at The Basic School. He then attended the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and in June 1989 reported to the 2d Marine Division for duty with 1st Battalion, 10th Marines. He served with Battery ‘C’ as a Forward Observer, Fire Direction Officer, and Executive Officer. His tour with Battery C included participation in Operations DESERT STORM and DESERT SHIELD with the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade. Additionally, he served on the battalion staff as the S-4A.
In May of 1992, he was assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot, Parris Island South Carolina where he served as a Series Commander, Company Executive Officer, and regimental Scheduling Officer. During this tour, he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
Following a student assignment at the Amphibious Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia, Captain McDaniel reported to Camp Pendleton, California in June 1996 for duty with the 11th Marines. During this tour, he served as the Deputy Assistant Fire Support Coordinator for 1st Marine Division and as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battery, 5th battalion, 11th Marines. From November 1997 until June 1999, Captain McDaniel served as the Fire Support Officer for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit where he was promoted to major.
In June 1999, Major McDaniel was assigned as the Ground Combat Element (GCE) Branch Head, Technology Division at the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab at Quantico, Virginia.
Major McDaniel transferred to the 3d battalion, 11th Marines in June of 2002 where he served as the Executive Officer until October 2004. This tour included deployments in support of OIF I and OIF II. Major McDaniel was promoted to LtCol in July of 2004.
Lieutenant Colonel McDaniel was transferred to MCCDC at Quantico, Virginia in October 2004, and assigned to Concepts and Plans Division where he served as the Branch Head for Service Concepts.
Lieutenant Colonel McDaniel was transferred in June 2007 to 2D Marine Division where he was assigned as the Executive Officer of 10th Marine Regiment. On October 1, 2007, LtCol McDaniel took command of 3D Battalion, 10th Marines. In March of 2008, LtCol McDaniel deployed his battalion as Task Force Military Police in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 08.1 and re-deployed to CONUS in late October of 2008. On 24 June 2009, LtCol McDaniel relinquished command.
In July, 2009, LtCol McDaniel was promoted to colonel and transferred to HQMC, PP&O for duty. Colonel McDaniel served as the Head of Readiness Branch (POR), PP&O. In July, 2012, Col McDaniel was transferred to the Royal College of Defence Studies, London, UK for the Academic Year.
Colonel McDaniel is married to the former Rhonda Rydell of Beeville, TX. They have two daughters — Rebekah (22) and Hannah (12). In addition to his B.S. degree from Texas A&M University, he holds a MPA from Oklahoma University. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
