Colonel J.C. (Chris) Lewis graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Upon graduation from The Basic School he was assigned to the artillery and attended the Field Artillery Officers Basic Course in Fort Sill, OK. His first operational assignment was with Battery F, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines where he served as a Guns Platoon Commander, Headquarters Platoon Commander and Battery Executive Officer. In 1994, he deployed as the Artillery Liaison Officer with Battalion Landing Team 1/4 and the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Colonel Lewis then served with 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company as a Firepower Control Team Leader and Brigade Platoon Commander for the ANGLICO training platoon. He was promoted to Captain in 1995 and deployed as the ANGLICO Team Leader on the 31st MEU in 1997.
Following his ANGLICO tour, Colonel Lewis attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA where he received a Masters of Science in Defense Systems Analysis. He then served in Headquarters Marine Corps, Programs and Resources Department as the Fires Analyst and as a staff officer supporting the recently established Marine Requirements Oversight Council.
In December 2001, Colonel Lewis was reassigned to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines where he served as the Battalion Executive Officer, deploying in February 2003 to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following the Battalion’s redeployment to Camp Pendleton, Colonel Lewis was reassigned as the 11th Marines Regimental Headquarters Battery Commander.
Colonel Lewis then attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA where he earned Distinguished Graduate with a Masters of Arts in Military Studies. He served as the Fires Officer, Artillery Occupational Field Sponsor and Joint Terminal Attack Controller Occupational Field Sponsor in Plans, Policies and Operations, HQMC. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in February 2007 and assigned to command 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines in Twentynine Palms, CA. In 2009, the battalion was ordered to deploy as the first Artillery Battalion supporting Regimental Combat Team-3 and the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Colonel Lewis attended the Naval War College in 2010 and graduated with Highest Distinction with a Masters of Arts in National Security Studies. He was then assigned to the Joint Staff as the Principal Deputy to the Legislative Director for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In 2013, Colonel Lewis arrived in Okinawa, Japan and assumed his duties as the III Marine Expeditionary Force Fires and Effects Coordinator. He was promoted to his current rank in September 2013.
On 18 June 2015, Colonel Lewis assumed command of 12th Marine Regiment aboard Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan.
His personal awards include the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and one gold star, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star, and the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.
