Major Tim Kao was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps on May 29, 1996 after graduating from the United States Air Force Academy as a distinguished graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Research. He has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Colorado and a Master of Science in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).
As a lieutenant, Major Kao completed Field Artillery Officer Basic School as a distinguished graduate and the served in Battery L, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines in Okinawa, Japan as a forward observer. He relocated with Battery L to 29 Palms, CA and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines where he served as the guns platoon commander, liaison officer, fire direction officer, HQ platoon commander, and executive officer for Kilo Battery 3/11.
As captain, Major Kao served at Army Space Command at Peterson AFB, Colorado as the Naval Space Command Liaison Officer. He deployed as the operations officer for an Army Space Support Team at the Combined Forces Land Component Command in Kuwait for Operation Enduring Freedom and to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom I in support of V Corps. After completing Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, VA as a distinguished graduate, he was assigned to 1st Battalion 12th Marines in Hawaii where he served as battalion liaison officer, S-4, Commanding Officer Battery C, and assistant operations officer.
As a major, he deployed to Al Asad, Iraq for OIF 06-08 in March of 2007 as the future operations officer for Task Force Military Police. After completing NPS, he was assigned to Operations Analysis Division at Marine Corps Combat Development Command and served as an Operations Analyst, Deputy Branch Head, and Deputy Director. Maj Kao then deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan as the HQ Battalion Commander for the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan in October 2012. Upon returning, he was assigned as the 3d Marine Division current operations officer and deputy current operations officer, before assuming his current duties on April 10, 2014 as the Commanding Officer of the Jungle Warfare Training Center.
Major Kao’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Naval Commendation Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.
