Major General Jay M. Bargeron enlisted in the Navy in 1984 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1989 after graduating from the University of Florida. His command tours include platoon and company level commands in 2d and 8th Marine Regiments, Commanding Officer of 2d Battalion, 8th Marines, Commanding Officer of 7th Marine Regiment, and Commanding Officer of Special Purpose Marine Air –Ground Task Force - Crisis Response - Central Command.
Major General Bargeron’s operational deployments include Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM, Haitian Migrant Relief Operations in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Operation NEW HORIZONS in Port Au Prince, Haiti, Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.
His staff tours include assignments as a Ground Combat Analyst at Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Staff Secretary at 2d Marine Division, Future Operations Planner at I MEF G-3, Regional Planner at I MEF G-5, Executive Officer of 5th Marine Regiment, Operations Officer at 2d Marine Division, Current Operations Officer at 2d Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Senior Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, Ground Officer Assignments Monitor at HQMC Manpower & Reserve Affairs, and Director of Tactical Training and Exercise Control Group, MCAGCC.
As a General Officer, he has served as the Deputy Director of Plans and Operations J-3 at U.S. European Command and as the Commanding General of Education Command/President, Marine Corps University.
Major General Bargeron is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, the School of Advanced Warfighting, and the National War College.
