Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Gill II
1st Battalion, 12th Marines

LtCol Gill graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and received his commission through the NROTC Program in May 2006. After graduating from The Basic School and US Army Field Artillery Basic Officer Leaders Course, he reported for duty with 11th Marines.

While assigned to both 1st and 2nd Battalion, LtCol Gill served as Forward Observer, Platoon Commander, Fire Direction Officer, Battery Liaison Officer, Battery Executive Officer, Battalion Fire Direction and Assistant Operations Officer. He would deploy with Battalion Landing Teams 2/5 and 1/4 in support of (ISO) two Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments.

Upon return from his second deployment, LtCol Gill executed orders to Camp LeJeune. From January 2011 to May 2012, he served as an Exercise Planner, AC/S G-3, II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF). In June 2012, LtCol Gill checked into the MEF Headquarters Group’s Advisor Training Cell and deployed to Afghanistan ISO Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. In August 2013, he returned to the AC/S G-3, II MEF and assumed the role of Information Operations Plans Officer and Deputy Special Technical Operations Chief. In February 2014, LtCol Gill was transferred to the Future Operations Section where he served the remainder of his time as a Planner and was responsible for II MEF’s CENTCOM and PACOM Global Force Management portfolios.

From July 2014 to May 2015, LtCol Gill attended the Expeditionary Warfare School. Upon graduating, he executed orders to 10th Marines. LtCol Gill assumed command of Battery B, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines (1/10) and deployed as part of the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan. In October 2016, he relinquished command and served as the Regiment’s interim Assistant Operations Officer prior to assuming command of HQ Battery Regiment. LtCol Gill relinquished command in June 2017 and would return to 1/10 in anticipation of a combat deployment. From June 2017 to May 2018, he served as the battalion’s Operations Officer and deployed to Syria as part of Task Force 9.7 ISO Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.

Upon redeployment, LtCol Gill executed orders and commanded Recruiting Station Jacksonville from June 2018 to July 2021. After recruiting duty, he transferred to 12th Marines and served as the 3d Marine Division’s Assistant Fire Support Coordinator. LtCol Gill was responsible for advising the Commanding General, planning and integrating joint and combined fires ISO multiple exercises and operational plans. During this time he was selected and subsequently assumed command of 1st Battalion, 12th Marines in May 2022.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.
