Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin P. Wagner
3d Battalion, 3d Marines

Lieutenant Colonel Wagner enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to MCRD San Diego for Recruit Training in July 1995. As a career infantry Marine he has served in all three Marine Expeditionary Forces and deployed around the globe. 

Following Recruit Training and graduation from the School of Infantry in 1995, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner was assigned to the Security Force Company, Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California. In 1998, he was selected to attend the US Naval Academy. Following graduation and commissioning in 2002, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner attended The Basic School and the Infantry Officer Course. Upon graduation, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner reported to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment in California.

While in 2/1, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, deploying to Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 and participating in Operation Vigilant Resolve. In 2005, he deployed as the 81mm Platoon Commander for BLT 2/1 as part of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Western Pacific and the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility.  During this deployment, the MEU conducted training in the Philippines, Australia, Djibouti, and Egypt and then went ashore in Iraq to conduct combat operations during Operation Steel Knight to defeat insurgent forces in the Euphrates River Valley.

From 2006 - 2009, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner served at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia as a Warfighting and Tactics Instructor, a Staff Platoon Commander, and as an instructor at the Infantry Officer Course. From 2009 - 2010, he attended the Expeditionary Warfare School.

In 2010, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner took command of Company C, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines and from 2010 - 2011 deployed to Now Zad District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. From 2011 - 2012, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner served as the Current Operations Officer and Regimental Landing Officer, Regimental Landing Team 2 in support of Exercise Bold Alligator. From 2012 - 2014, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner served as the Battalion Operations Officer for 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines. While with 2/2, he deployed to Eastern Europe with Special Purpose MAGTF - Black Sea conducting Theater Security Cooperation operations in the region.

From 2014 - 2016, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner served at the Marine Corps University as an instructor at the Lejeune Leadership Institute and as a Faculty Advisor at the Expeditionary Warfare School. In 2016, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner reported to the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and graduated from the College of Naval Command & Staff and the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School.

From 2017 - 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner served as an 0505 MAGTF Planner and the Future Operations officer for 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade on Okinawa, Japan before returning to Quantico for duty.

In June 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Wagner reported to Manpower & Reserve Affairs as the Section Head for Enlisted Assignments in the Manpower Management Enlisted Assignments Branch and while serving there was selected to command “America’s Battalion”.  He departed Quantico in June 2021 and reported to the Commanding Officer of 3d Marine Regiment for duty in July 2021.

Lieutenant Colonel Wagner's personal awards include the Bronze Star (w/ V), the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/ silver star.
