Ryan Kelsey is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania in 2002. Ryan Kelsey enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2002 and attended recruit training with Platoon 1089 Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corp Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of recruit training in November 2002 Private Kelsey attended Company C, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry East, Camp Geiger, North Carolina where he was assigned the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 0331, Infantry Machine Gunner. Private Kelsey reported to Company C, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2D Marine Division, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in January 2003. While a member of 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, Private Kelsey was promoted to the rank of Private First Class in February 2003 and served as a Machine Gunner. In June 2003 Private First Class Kelsey was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. In February 2004 Lance Corporal Kelsey deployed with the Battalion Landing Team 1/6, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and deployed to Afghanistan. While on the MEU Lance Corporal Kelsey was nominated as the Marine of the Quarter, March 2004. Lance Corporal Kelsey attended the Corporals Leadership Course in Camp Liberty, Kuwait and returned from the MEU in September 2004. Lance Corporal Kelsey attended the Infantry Machine Gun Leaders Course, Advanced Infantry Training Company, School of Infantry East in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he was promoted to Corporal in October 2004. In March 2005 Corporal Kelsey was deployed with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines as Squad Leader to Fallujah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In October 2005, Corporal Kelsey returned from deployment and promoted to the rank of Sergeant in December 2005. In December 2005, Sergeant Kelsey made a Permanent Change of Station to the Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia and served as an Infantry Tactics Instructor. In January 2006 Sergeant Kelsey attended the Sergeant’s Course, SNCO Academy, Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia. In August 2008, Sergeant Kelsey was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3d Marine Division in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. In December 2008, Sergeant Kelsey attended the School of Infantry’s Detachment West, Infantry Squad Leaders Course where he was the “Gung Ho” award recipient. In May 2009, Sergeant Kelsey deployed to Nowzad, Afghanistan in Support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Machine Gun Section Leader where he took part in Operation Khanjar. Sergeant Kelsey returned from deployment in October 2009. Sergeant Kelsey was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in January 2010. Staff Sergeant Kelsey deployed to Nawa, Afghanistan in November 2010 as Platoon Sergeant and returned in June 2011. In September 2011, Staff Sergeant Kelsey was assigned to Combat Logistics Company 21, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2D Marine Logistics Group as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and Operations & Training Chief. In August 2012, Staff Sergeant Kelsey attended the Career Course, SNCO Academy, Marine Corps University, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In January 2014, Staff Sergeant Kelsey attended Marine Combat Instructor Course, School of Infantry East, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he was designated the secondary MOS of 0913 Combat Instructor and assigned to Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry East where he has served as Combat Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant, and Company Executive Officer. Staff Sergeant Kelsey was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in October 2015. In April 2016, Gunnery Sergeant Kelsey completed the Infantry Unit Leaders Course, Advanced Infantry Training Company, School of Infantry East. In June 2016, Gunnery Sergeant Kelsey attended the Advance Course, SNCO Academy, Marine Corps University in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In March 2017, Gunnery Sergeant Kelsey was assigned for duty with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 2d Marine Division as the Weapons Company CAAT 1 Platoon Sergeant. He completed the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) 17-2 to Okinawa, Japan from August 2017- February 2018. While on UDP GySgt Kelsey conducted Fuji Viper 17.6 in Mt Fuji, Japan, Korea Marine Exchange Program (KMEP) 18-1.4 in Seoul, South Korea and 18-1.6 in Pyeoung Chang, South Korea. In April 2018, Gunnery Sergeant Kelsey was selected and assigned as the 2d Marine Division’s Inspector General’s Inspector Chief. He attended the Inspector General of the Marine Corps (IGMC) Symposium’s in 2018 at Naval Air Station Coronado, California and in 2019 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. He also attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers Glynco, Georgia Inspector General Criminal Investigator Academy Essentials of Inspector General Investigations Course in August 2018. Gunnery Sergeant Kelsey was promoted to Master Sergeant on 1 July 2020. Upon selection, he was assigned as the Operations Chief/ Senior Enlisted Advisor of the Jungle Warfare Training Center, 3d Marine Division, Camp Gonsalves, Okinawa, Japan in July 2020.
Master Sergeant Kelsey’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V” and gold stars in lieu of third award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat “V”, and the Combat Action Ribbon with gold star in lieu of second award.
